The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is the leader of the clinical and scientific experts at Ariadne Labs. Reporting to the Executive Director and serving as a member of the Executive Team, s/he provides oversight, guidance, and support to program and platform directors, ensuring that our findings are supported by rigorous evidence and results in clinically meaningful change. In addition, the CMO works in close collaboration with the Executive Director to develop and expand our external relationships, strategic partnerships, and community, and to raise Ariadne Labs’ profile as an emerging global leader in health systems innovation.
The Organization. Ariadne Labs was founded in 2012 as a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. Our mission is to save lives and reduce suffering through systems innovation–the design, testing, and spread of simple, scalable solutions for better care at the most critical moments in people’s lives everywhere. Our work has produced simple interventions to enable better care in childbirth, surgical care, and serious illness, and is already achieving enormous impact nationally and internationally. We are growing rapidly as a result – from 15 staff and researchers in 2012 to more than 80 today working on multiple projects across the U.S. and the world. We anticipate that the organization will continue its growth trajectory.
Ariadne Labs is a matrixed organization, with a growing portfolio of projects in various stages of development and three centers of expertise, known as platforms, that provide thought leadership, project guidance, and technical support at every stage of work (research and design, testing, and implementation).
The Role. The 8 directors of the programs and platforms of Ariadne Labs report directly to the CMO as the clinical leader to the project and platform faculty. A central responsibility of this role is to lead the the platform directors as they build the new platforms of Innovation, Science & Technology, and Implementation into high-functioning and well-integrated centers of expertise.
The CMO is also responsible, with the Chief Project Officer, for ensuring that Ariadne’s projects, initiatives, and programs successfully meet their scientific objectives as they advance from inception to solution to broad scale implementation. This will entail working closely with the project leaders to generate and advance ideas, make choices about direction and activities, and solve problems as they arise. The CMO will ensure that the programs and platforms work collaboratively and efficiently together and in alignment with Ariadne’s values.
In addition, the CMO will mentor faculty and research scientists through regular meetings and events, and work with external departments, organizations and individuals who might benefit faculty research and thinking about programmatic issues. S/he will also help grow the Ariadne Labs scientific community by identifying and helping recruit clinicians and scientists who can benefit Ariadne Labs programs as ambassadors, employees, or partners.
Externally, the CMO collaborates with and supports the Executive Director in fundraising and external advocacy, representing Ariadne Labs at key meetings, conferences, and serving as a spokesperson for the mission of Ariadne Labs. S/he will expand the organization’s networks both nationally and internationally, and will be responsible with the rest of the Executive Team for helping to develop key relationships. This includes:
- Managing external relations within the Boston clinical community and beyond in support of faculty and programmatic work.
- Cultivating and stewarding relationships with potential partner organizations and meet with them about the content of their work, observe healthcare settings which are relevant, build relationships with hospitals, institutes, etc.
- Participating in external events that will aid our understanding of how others conduct healthcare or other kinds of innovation.
- Representing Ariadne in courses, meetings, conferences, and other public events on scientific and academic issues.
- Helping share and spread the lessons of our work and advocating for both Ariadne and parent institutions and stakeholders.
Internally, the CMO is a member of the 5 person Executive Team which sets organizational priorities and strategy, and makes critical decisions regarding our portfolio of projects and operations.
Our core values are: Respect for the Ariadne Labs mission, our community, each other, and ourselves; stewardship of our work and resources; pursuit of excellence, with a focus on continual improvement; a belief in a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to our work; and a commitment to meaningful diversity and inclusion in our work and in the Ariadne Labs community.
Characteristics of leaders who are most successful at Ariadne Labs include: humility about the limits of one’s own expertise and experience, intellectual curiosity and agility, openness and generosity, self discipline, and service orientation.
