JOB SUMMARY: As part of a significant expansion of its innovative and patient-centered programs in genomics and precision health, Geisinger has launched a new national initiative, based in the Washington, DC area. Geisinger National Precision Health will accelerate implementation in genomics and data science and develop novel national partnerships to broaden Geisinger’s impact in precision and population health. Geisinger National Precision Health is committed to exploring and developing the scientific evidence base to greatly accelerate adoption of genomics into healthcare, to implement measurable change in the practice of healthcare, to develop and implement national policies, and to serve as a national model for implementing a new focus on healthcare that emphasizes seamless integration of research and clinical practice, anticipatory and preventive medicine, and investments that emphasize population-based “health care” instead of “sick care”. By design, the unit borrows a culture and practices and emphasizes entrepreneurship and competencies from startup companies, biotechnology and other emerging technology companies, and Silicon Valley in California. To advance this effort, Geisinger National seeks candidates for an entrepreneurial scholar and leader who will join the senior leadership team to develop and implement our integrated national strategy in research, genome policy, and stakeholder engagement. The successful candidate will build implementation-focused services to support genomics and precision health, will work with ethical, legal, and social issue (ELSI) researchers at Geisinger and nationally, and will provide national leadership and expertise for implementing precision health strategies. As a national thought leader and entrepreneurial implementer of new approaches, the individual will contribute to the national dialogue in policy, engagement, and implementation in the rapidly developing areas of population health, population genomics, and precision health. The ideal candidate will have at least 15 years of progressive experience in policy and engagement settings with focus on genomics technology and services, including population and precision health, anticipatory genomics, national policy discussions, and stakeholder engagement. This should include at least 10 years of experience in research program development, successful implementation, and management, reporting directly to executive leadership. The individual should possess a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in a relevant field and should qualify for a faculty appointment at the rank of full Professor. A national and international reputation for excellence and an established record of professional productivity are essential. This position will report to the Director, Geisinger National Precision Health and will be based at the Geisinger National facility in North Bethesda/Rockville, MD or other site(s) by agreement. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Build an implementation-focused service core to design and manage policies, procedures, and infrastructure capacity to support genomics and precision health in health systems nationally o Promote potential for clinical data, including genomic data, to be a resource for internal and external research o Develop and maintain provider outreach and resources to support adoption and quality improvement nationally • Connect ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) research at Geisinger and nationally with clinical policy development and implementation to power feedback loops and promote cross-fertilization of ideas, experiences, and expertise • Design adaptive or ‘learning’ processes for on-going assessment of policies and practices for clinical integration of genomic information, including uptake and attitudes among stakeholders (patients, care teams, and other clinical services) and outcome measures to inform cost-analyses or other system performance needs o Apply implementation science methods to measure effectiveness, adapt practices, and inform overarching policies o Develop partnerships and collaborations with other domains of healthcare delivery expertise within Geisinger to anticipate data needs or analyses to inform and advance policy goals for precision health • Establish substantive and transparent mechanisms to integrate meaningful engagement with patients and relevant communities nationally about the clinical integration of precision health strategies and tools • Provide national leadership and expertise for implementing precision health strategies within preventive and diagnostic care through tailored and responsive policies and systems COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS: Demonstrated thorough knowledge of and high level professional skills relevant to the conduct of research and communication of results. Demonstrated strong organizational and problem solving skills, demonstrated experience and history of success in developing and publishing research communications at national meetings. Demonstrated ability to engage, supervise, mentor, and promote development of other investigators. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement new programs/initiatives in a fast-moving environment. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Doctoral degree (PhD) with 15 or more years’ experience in national genomics and policy research preferred. The degree must be in scientific, medical or public health field appropriate to the specific field of research required for the position. A national and international reputation for excellence and an established record of productivity as demonstrated by a substantial number of peer-reviewed or equivalent publications and a record of increasing responsibility over time are essential.
