Birmingham, AL - UAB Medicine and the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Medicine are pleased to announce the search for the Director, Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care. This is a tremendous opportunity for a physician-scholar to help advance and shape the academic, clinical, and research activities of the Division and meet the needs of older adults and patients with advanced or life-threatening illness.
The Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care at UAB Medicine is nationally recognized for its clinical and research programs. The research faculty ranks among the country’s best-funded and is noted for exceptional mentoring and training, from undergraduate researchers to post-doctoral fellows. The Division has steadily increased its total funding to $4.9 million per year. In addition, the members of the Division are part of the Integrative Center for Aging Research (ICAR) at UAB. ICAR is an integrated center for aging researchers that provides support for research, education, and for the development of the new generation of aging researchers. ICAR has over 300 members, including researchers from UAB and other institutions nationwide.
This opportunity to lead is an exciting one, well-suited to a physician scholar with bold ideas about the future of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care. The Director will foster an environment that simultaneously promotes scholarship and academic productivity, as well as outstanding clinical care, and will position the Division to become a global leader in the fields of aging and palliative care. The new Director will grow the Division through strategic recruitment to expand the areas of gerontology, geriatrics, and palliative care. The Director is also expected to improve the operational infrastructure and processes that are necessary to sustain the Division’s growth.
The ideal candidate for the leadership role is a funded physician-scholar with demonstrated accomplishments in a relevant area of research. The Director is expected to be a respected gerontology, geriatric, and/or palliative care practitioner with a distinguished track record as a clinician, educator, and investigator, with experience in leading programs and projects. Candidates must hold the degree of MD, MD/PhD or equivalent and be board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine or Family Medicine; additional certification from the American Board of Medical Specialties in Geriatric Medicine and/or Hospice and Palliative Medicine is ideal but not required. Candidates must possess qualifications for appointment at the associate professor or professor rank at UAB School of Medicine.
