The Nurse Practitioner (NP)/Physician Assistant (PA) hospitalist works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health care team. He or she will be expected to perform various tasks on behalf of the orthopedic service and hospital that are important for safe, efficient and patient centered medical care. The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, and provides direct patient care services. He or she will also educate patients and their families in order to increase their satisfaction with their hospitalization and to promote wellness, prevent medical problems, facilitate patient services and intervene as needed in acute and chronic disease processes. This position is primarily inpatient (adult) orthopedic floor coverage but may require operating room support (total joint replacement cases) and in the Duke South Orthopedic Trauma clinic 1H.
PA: Graduate from a Master's Degree Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies.
NP: Graduate of MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner FNP, AGNP or AGACNP Program
NP: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina and approval to practice as an NP.
PA: Licensure as a Physician Assistant in the state of North Carolina.
PA: National Commission on Certification of PAs (NCCPA) certification is required
NP: National certification as an NP (AGNP, AGACNP or FNP certification)
Recent and pending December 2022 graduates are welcome to apply
1 year inpatient surgical APP experience is preferred
ACLS suggested but not required
This is a FULL TIME, SALARIED POSITION AND WILL INCLUDE a mix of 12-hour and 10-hour shifts depending on clinical location.
This includes occasional weekend, holiday and rare nighttime coverage.
Schedule may be modified by the clinical or leadership team to fit clinical needs of the service.
