Summary
Serve as a Physician Assistant with the Anesthesia Pain Service section of the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System. The PA/NP provides comprehensive pain management care to Veterans with chronic pain - developing individualized - whole health centered care plans - and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. The goal is to support patients in managing their pain and improving their overall quality of life and function outcomes.

- The Anesthesia Pain Service is an interdisciplinary program that is based at the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System that provides comprehensive pain management service to Veterans undergoing surgical procedures
- This work involves the pre-operative - peri-operative - and postoperative assessment - care - and education of these patients and coordination with other team members including physicians (anesthesiologists and surgeons) - clinical pharmacists - psychologists - Physician assistants - program support assistants - and staff at the VA medical center where the surgical procedures and surgical evaluation are performed as well as in the community
- The PA provides direct and indirect care in a self-directed manner and demonstrates proficiency in practice based on conscious planning
- He/she is self-directed in goal setting for managing complex patient situations and is able to successfully perform activities appropriate to his/her grade as outlined in the Physician Assistant Qualification Standards
- The PA should have a strong clinical knowledge of Interventional and Chronic pain management using non-opioid modalities and appropriate opioid use - care of post-surgical patients - and coordination of care
- Being able to navigate CPRS and VISTA-web are a necessity - as well as good communication skills and an ability to develop high-quality interpersonal relationships with other medical providers and services including primary care - inpatient interdisciplinary teams - surgical and anesthesia teams - and the Veteran population
- Working well with the current Pain team is a must
- As the Anesthesia Pain/ Chronic Pain Service grows - the PA will require the ability to function independently and shape the position to maximize impact and visibility
- The PA should demonstrate rapport - effective communication - and interpersonal skills with patients and/or their families - staff - co-workers - stakeholders - and providers towards the achievement of the mutually identified goal of safe pain management
- The Pain Physician assistant will be responsible for completing the following responsibilities: Assess preoperative interventional Pain procedure patients and manage postoperative pain for those outpatients
- Facilitate perioperative flow of patients on day of interventional pain procedure by working with Interventional Pain and Operating Room staff to prepare patients scheduled for procedure
- Assist with regional anesthesia procedures
- Evaluate and complete PMT Pain consults doing comprehensive history - physical exam - assessment and treatment plan/recommendations
- Educate patients regarding regional Anesthesia/Pain techniques - medications - fall preventions - and other patient care modalities
- Document all aspects of patient care in a timely and accurate manner
- Perform other related duties as determined by the attending physician or by the Chiefs of Anesthesiology & Pain services
- Work closely with mental health - primary care - health coaches - and other medical providers to coordinate pain management goals of procedure patients and chronic pain patients
- Outpatient management of post-operative pain medications including phone calls and clinic visit
